Golf Resorts Across Central Florida Affected by Hurricane Milton
As of Thursday, October 10th, nearly 3 million people in Central Florida are without power as Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 hurricane, makes landfall near Sarasota.
Hurricane Milton brought wind gusts up to 135 mph and dumped 13.2 inches of rain on the Tampa area, with Orlando receiving as much as 9 inches. The wind gusts in St. Petersburg were strong enough to tear the roof off Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays.
The storm's landfall near Tampa, with long-lasting impacts stretching through Orlando, has affected some of the largest golf resorts and courses in the country. Cabot Citrus Farms, Streamsong Resort, Innisbrook Resort, The Concession, and Bay Hill, Mission Inn were all impacted by the storm.
Streamsong Resort, located approximately 60 miles inland from Milton's landfall, sustained minimal damage to its facilities but remains without power into the weekend. The property is uniquely isolated, with the nearest settlement located more than 20 miles away. Even with power, the resort is nearly in complete darkness.
“Our team is preparing the resort and courses for reopening, and all are in great condition following the impact of the storm. However, like much of Central Florida, the resort is currently without power, and we will be unable to welcome guests back until power is restored,” Streamsong’s press release stated.
Correction: Guests were welcomed back to Streamsong Resort starting Tuesday October 15th with all amenities available.
Further north, but closer to the ocean, Cabot Citrus Farms survived the storm with minimal damage. They stated:
“The Roost will be closed until October 23rd for repairs. While daytime play on The Wedge remains open, night golf is currently unavailable. Bass fishing is also closed.”
Located north of the Tampa area but closer to the Gulf, Innisbrook Resort canceled the Copperhead Championship on Monday, October 14th, in preparation for the hurricane. No additional information on Innisbrook has been provided by their team at this time.
Located north of Orlando in Howey in the Hills, Mission Inn Resort experienced moderate wind and rain. The Inn had no damage, Las Colinas had minimal damage and El Campeon saw some flooding and tree damage
“Currently, Las Colinas is available for play all 18 holes. El Campeon is still closed until next week as we have over 40 trees down and there is some flooding. As we continue to clean up, open date may change,” said Art Fasano, Director of Sales and Marketing for Mission Inn.
With busy season for Florida golf weeks away, the Central Florida golf corridor will make a full recovery. Conservative estimates have all courses above fully operational in a few weeks time. For anyone with tee times before that two week period, it is recommended to call the clubhouse for day to day updates on play and stay.
