Pinehurst Unveils Plans for No. 11
After the smashing success of Tom Doak's Pinehurst no. 10, plans were released this week for another sandmines course on the ever expanding property.
This past Monday, Pinehurst Resort announced that they will be adding another golf course to the property with no. 11. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw have been tabbed to do the project and construction will begin this fall in the Sandmines region of the resort.
Coore and Crenshaw have history at Pinehurst as they did the renovations on no. 2 prior to the 2014 U.S. Open. Now they will have a site to design and construct a course of their own at Pinehurst.
Located south of the resort and the famed no. 2 course, Pinehurst no. 11 will be at the Sandmines site next to Tom Doak’s no. 10. Doak’s creation at no. 10 garnered much acclaim, including Golf Digest’s best new public course of 2024.
The site, a mix of sand dunes and trees, sits on what was once an old sand mine that closed in the 1930’s during the Great Depression. According to Coore, “the sand spoil piles are here, and Mother Nature provided the trees, and it’s all incredible. It’s not too often you get that kind of combination, and it creates a site that is extraordinarily interesting for golf.”
Coore and Crenshaw envision a course that winds and twists through the trees and sand dunes. Even though it will be in the midst of Carolina pines, no. 11 is envisioned to be dramatic in shape and style, with ridges and massive mounds to be played over and around.
Construction is set to begin later this year, with a targeted opening date sometime in the fall of 2027. Also opening in 2025 is a new pro shop for the Sandmine’s courses and a restaurant, lodging will follow in 2027.
“We’re far, far from the sea, but we have these contours and features with landforms that remind you of spots in Ireland or Scotland, and yet here it is, in Pinehurst” stated Coore as he talked glowingly about the possibilities of Pinehurst no. 11.
