Golfweek - USA Today
The PGA Tour hops islands this week for the first full field event of the 2024 season. Waialae Country Club in Honolulu is the host to one of the longest running events on tour, now called the Sony Open.
Those who played the Sentry last week at Kapalua will face a much different challenge this week at Waialae. While players could bomb away without worry last week, this week will be a different story on the 7,044 yard, par 70 Waialae Country Club. With smaller greens and narrower driving corridors, ball striking and short game acumen will be the main skills needed to contend this week. Si Woo Kim was first in strokes gained approach and hit 83% of greens in regulation en route to his victory last season at -18 following a pair of weekend 64s.
Sony Open Picks & Predictions
Corey Conners +3300/$9,800 DFS
Golf Monthly
When talking “horses for courses,” my favorite winning play this week is Corey Conners. He has shown that Waialae Country Club fits his game well as he has four consecutive top 12 finishes at the Sony Open. One of the better ball strikers on tour, Conners has gained at least 7.5 strokes on the field in ball striking in three of the last four years. If he putts better than last year, where he lost strokes to the field, he is poised for a title run.
Golf Monthly
J.T. Poston +4,000 / $9,100 DFS
Golfweek - USA Today
Since we are talking about Hawaii, how about a player that has been riding a wave of good golf since the fall - J.T. Poston. Poston has six top 10 finishes in the last 6 months, including a T5 finish last week at Kapalua. A solid iron player and great putter, Waialae Country Club should fit well with Poston’s skill set. Even though he hasn’t played that well in this event in the past, his current form suggests this year could be different for Poston.
Byeong Hun An +3,500 / $8,700
Cal Athletics
After serving a three month suspension for PED use, An came roaring out of the gates at the Sentry with a fourth place finish. Couple his good play last week with a T12 finish in the Sony Open last year in his first time in the event, An is a name to look out for this week at Waialae.
Justin Rose +4,000 / $8,200
Tampa Bay Times
After a very poor first three rounds at Kapalua, Rose fired a tournament best 61 on Sunday and lapped the field in approach play statistics. If he can carry momentum from that round into the Sony Open, the always good ball striker could find himself in contention. Although not a great track record at Waialae Country Club, Rose does have four top 20 finishes in five starts.
Cam Davis +5,000 / $8,500 DFS
Golf Magazine
Bermuda grass can gives pros fits at times, but not Cam Davis. In the last 50 rounds played on Bermuda, Davis is fourth in total strokes gained. Couple this with his four consecutive cuts made in this event and never a finish higher than T31, he is a safe play at worst and title contender at best. His final round 65 at the Sentry should give him confidence going into a tournament he has always been competitive in.
Sleeper
Nico Echavarria +18,000 / $6,300
Complete Golfer
Need a deep sleeper this week at the Sony Open? Well, you could do worse than Nico Echavarria. Coming off a good showing at Kapalua where he shot -20 for a top 25 finish, Echavarria is a boom or bust player, but has a good history at Waialae. In last year’s event he finished 12th, so if he keeps the good play going this week, he could cash at some high odds and/or cheap DFS price.
